Where To Go For Breakfast, Brunch and Coffee In Byron Bay

If you’re the type requiring morning fuel before starting the day ahead, then consider Byron Bay your safe space. Coffee-lovers and brunch addicts are well catered for in this sunny part of the world, with a deliciously large number of breakfast spots dotted throughout the town.

Once you’ve helped yourself to an in-room Nespresso coffee or tea (complimentary as part of your stay at The Lord Byron), then may we suggest heading for brekkie at one of our local favourites.

17 Of Our Favourite Cafes For Coffee & Breakfast In Byron

Sunday Sustainable Bakery

A short stroll from The Lord Byron, is Sunday Sustainable Bakery. We love the local, welcoming hospitality here, along with the freshly baked goods from their artisan bakers. On a hot day, their cold coffee is extensive, with options including nitrogen-infused cold drip, iced Ayrvedic living chai latte, and house-made lemon mint tea, sweetened with local Manuka honey.

For a winning start to the day, may we suggest having your partner in crime collect a takeaway croissant, bring it back to your hotel room, and enjoy a breezy breakfast in bed (with our complimentary in-room Nespresso coffees).

Bay Grocer

An unquestionably friendly choice for breakfast, is the Bay Grocer. Perch in the courtyard garden and take your pick from the constantly changing menu of tasty things. Highlights include the house-made bircher, granola and chia breakfast bowls, fresh juices and protein smoothies. Allpress is their choice of beans when it comes to coffee, which we couldn’t be happier about.

Jimmy’s Coffee

Directly opposite the Lord Byron, at 125 Jonson St, Jimmy’s Coffee is more than a mere convenient caffeine pit stop. Yes, their coffee – using Rosso Coffee, roasted in Melbourne – is great and caters for all range of milk drinkers (soy, macadamia, oat and Aussie dairy). Add to this their lovely energy and positive vibes, breakfast jaffles, coffee alternatives (matcha and turmeric lattes are a go here), and regular fashion markets; and you’ve found your next go-to.

Byron General Store

Serving locals and travellers since 1947, The Byron Bay General Store is an iconic cafe and a wonderful breakfast and brunch spot. The vegetarian menu is a favourite for both carnivores and vegan-eaters alike. There’s also a range of options no matter your food mood – from hearty dishes like Truffled Mushroom Toast, Tempeh Gado Gado, and the Haloumi Burger; to fan favourite Acai Bowls and superfood smoothies; and adaptogenic hot drinks.

Vagabond

In the Habitat Lifestyle Precinct of the Arts & Industrial Estate, is where you’ll find Vagabond. This plant-based cafe and providore serves a menu that is as wholesome as the space is welcoming, and it’s truly a simple pleasure to enjoy breakfast here. You might opt for their Avocado Sourdough – loaded with macadamia fetta, lemon, fresh herbs, crunchy pepitas and sunflower seeds. Or perhaps the more worldly flavour of the Black Sticky Rice has your heart – with its coconut whip, mango puree, fresh bananas, and black sesame praline. We also highly recommend a Vagabond smoothie, made with organic spray-free produce.

Wide Open Road

In 2019, Melbourne coffee roasters Wide Open Road opened up their Byron Bay outpost which we’ve been delighted about. To be expected, you can expect their delicious signature coffees to be the main focus here which, by the way, have been sourced and roasted with sustainability front of mind. The house blend is the certified organic Harvest Moon, while a number of single-origin options are also on rotation. If you’re feeling peckish, grab a breakfast bagel or seasonal granola.

Tones Cafe

Meander through the immersive lifestyle space of Soko in Byron Bay’s Industrial Estate, and make your way to the the La Marzocco at Tones Cafe, firing out Allpress coffee. In this quieter part of Byron, it’s a real pleasure to perch with your coffee (and a little something from their seasonal breakfast menu), and just soak in that slow holiday mood. Once the caffeine has sunk in, browse through the rest of the space which includes St Agni, Braer flowers, Yeah, Nice Gallery, and Ziah Swimwear.

Barefoot Brew Room

Barefoot Roasters specialises in artisan coffee, with its roasting warehouse located nearby in Ballina. Fortunately for us caffeine-fiends, they also opened up the Barefoot Brew Room here in Byron Bay – a space where you can indulge in their fresh roasted coffee blends and single origin coffee. Blend II is the main (award-winning) blend, and head roaster Rodney is an award-winner himself, having made it to the Top 10 Roasters in the Golden Bean awards.

Treehouse

Open for your coffee fix everyday from 7am, Treehouse is a locally-loved hangout. The venue is hidden amongst lush palm trees opposite Belongil Beach, in a quieter peaceful part of town. Alongside its rustic wooden interiors, vintage-inspired furnishings and homely atmosphere, they also serve up simple and light breakfast options, such as pastries and wonderful sandwiches. Dine in or takeaway.

Folk

Homemade, home grown, a lush atmosphere and swingin’ tunes. That’s the recipe behind breakfast success at Folk. Located away from Byron’s busy town centre, you’ll discover Folk Cafe tucked away closer to Belongil Beach. A delicious plant-based and vegetarian menu takes centre stage, setting you up for a most nourishing start to the day. The coffee is organic and consciously roasted by Melbourne roasters Dukes, and for the non-dairy among us, you’ll be pleased to hear that dairy-alternative milks are offered at no extra charge.

Barrio

We’ve said before that Barrio is one of our favourite restaurants for dinner in Byron Bay. Happily, they are also open for breakfast and coffee from Monday to Saturday. It’s a small but quality brekkie menu here, with Mediterranean-style flavours. Think: silverbeet open omelette with harissa; or chipotle corn bread with avocado, pickled cabbage and labne.

Bayleaf

Bayleaf is one of Byron’s most popular brunch spots, and we aren’t at all surprised. The coffee and food here is exquisite, and their menu caters for all sorts of appetites and dietary requirements. In the mood for a Breaky Burger with maple and schezwan roasted pork belly, egg, bitter green slaw and pineapple salsa? You got it! Prefer the sound of Purple Kumara and Hemp Seed Flatbread with a pumpkin and garlic puree, roast baby veggies, kale and cherry tomatoes. Consider it done! Our General Manager Jess says you can’t go past their Mushroom Toast.

Byron Fresh

Byron Fresh is a fun dining experience that really embodies the spirit of Byron Bay. Superfoods, free-range, organic and local produce are used where possible here, and refined sugars are limited as much as possible. The atmosphere here is a very authentic Byron experience, which we love.

Little No Bones

Just a two minute walk from The Lord Byron is Little No Bones. This fully vegan and plant-based cafe post is petite, but perfect for grabbing a coffee and treat as you step outside of the hotel.

Happy Days Espresso & Sandwich Bar

Yes, sandwiches are taking over our screen time right now. But there are sandwiches, and then there are Happy Days’ next level creations of gourmet goodness. Piled sky high, with the kind of condiments that take a sambo to the next level (we’re looking at you, pickled chilli mayo and salted onion), Happy Days’ menu will satisfy all levels of brunch cravings. Of course, the crew are here to caffeinate you with the goods too, with beans from local roaster, Beam Coffee.

Masa Byron Bay

Fancy yourself a sweet tooth? Don’t miss Masa. This artisan craft bakehouse offers up wickedly tempting baked goods, fresh each morning. We’re talking twice baked almond croissants, matcha and blueberry jam donuts, pistachio and lime croissants. We must stop typing, because the temptation is all too high. Tip: get here early in the morning to avoid peak lines and any disappointment.

La Belle Crepe

Sometimes, a taste of Paris is exactly what you need in a holiday. La Belle Crepe provides the answer, with traditional and authentic French crepes, savoury galettes and sweet options. Serving their artisanally made goods from a truck within a hidden garden venue off of Jonson St, there is so much to love about a breakfast at La Belle Crepe. For those with gluten restrictions, vegetarians and vegans, they have a range of options to suit, including plant-based choices.
