Our Winter Guide To Byron: What To Do & Where To Go
As the winter weather creeps in across the country, you’d be forgiven for wishing warmer days could make a comeback… ASAP. Fret not, however! There’s a cosy, glistening charm hovering around Byron Bay in the winter, that makes it an ideal holiday destination for those wanting a slice of sunshine.
Weather chat aside, you might still be wondering what to do in Byron in winter. So, we asked our team, who rounded up their best recommendations and favourite things to do, and we’ve put them all together in the guide below!
What to do in Byron in Winter
1. Enjoy the outdoors
It might seem strange to suggest getting outdoors. But with Byron’s average temperature in the peak of winter ranging from 19 – 20ºC, this is a beautiful time of year to experience Byron’s outdoors without the big crowds.
Cape Byron Lighthouse
Our General Manager Jess, suggests adding Byron’s iconic lighthouse to your winter hit-list. “It’s the perfect place to watch the sunrise on a cool winter’s day. I recommend borrowing one of our complimentary bikes, riding up to The Pass and then walking the rest of the way up to the top for a magical start to the day!”. Our team member Natalie also recommends coming here during “late afternoons for amazing sunsets”.
Killen Falls
About 30 minutes by car from Byron, you’ll find Killen Falls, one of Jess’ favourites. “Killen Falls is an amazing waterfall, which you’re able to swim right underneath of. Even on a colder day, it’s worth taking the trip as it really is just beautiful. While you’re there be sure to drop into Harvest Cafe which is just up the road.”
Whale Watching
As our Receptionist Roxanne says, “A must do if you come to Byron Bay during winter is whale watching! There are a few good tours but my favourite one is Wild Byron. They are very knowledgeable, fun and respectful of the ocean. You will see many whales, dolphins and even turtles if you’re lucky! The views of Byron Bay from the boat are also stunning.”
Horse Riding
“For something a little different, go on a horse riding tour adventure” Jess suggests. “There’s a few different tours to choose from, including a sunrise and a beach tour. My favourite would be the beach tour.”
2. Sip away on a Distillery or Brewery Tour
Here in Byron, we’re lucky enough to be home to some fantastic local producers. The better news, is that they run tours, too!
Cape Byron Gin Distillery
Visit Cape Byron Gin Distillery (home to Brookie’s Gin, which we use in our in-room cocktails!) for a Rainforest & Distillery Tour. Here, you’ll head off on a journey through the family farm and subtropical rainforest. Afterwards, you’ll warm up inside in their distillery with a full guided tasting.
Stone & Wood Brewery
Still thirsty? Stone & Wood’s guided brewery tours and tastings are perfect for a wintery or rainy day. After your welcome beer (are you sold already?!), one of the Tasting Room crew will run you through an exploration of beer and the Stone & Wood story, before you tour the brewing deck and enjoy a guided tasting.
Husk Distillery
Home to the famous Ink Gin and Husk Rum, you’ll find Husk Distillery – one of Andy’s recommendations for a winter experience! Set on 150 acres of farmland, there are three distillery tours to choose from depending on what you’re after. Once per month, they also run special edition distillery dinners, which are a beautiful option if you’re looking for something special.
3. Drive to Byron’s surrounding towns
Whether you’re driving to Byron or hiring a car upon arrival, we absolutely love getting away to Byron’s surrounding towns on a rainy day.
Bangalow
Jess recommends Bangalow, a cute little town about 20 minutes drive from Byron. “It has lots of yummy cafes and cute little boutique shops. The local pub is a great place to stop for a drink. The Bangalow markets are also a treat and they are on every 4th Sunday of the month.” Pictured right: Woods, Bangalow)
Burleigh Heads
Maria from the team loves Burleigh Heads. “Watch the surf while enjoying a nice meal at The Pavillion.”
Cabarita Beach
And Roxanne’s pick is for a day trip out to Cabarita Beach. “This lovely little town about 40 minutes north of Byron Bay is definitely worth the drive. From cute little cafes to beautiful beaches, it is also my favourite spot to watch the sunset! And if you feel like a delightful and luxurious spa treatment, try Halcyon Spa.” (Pictured left: Nectar, Cabarita Beach)
4. Dine out for dinner and drinks
With an ever-growing restaurant scene, there’s no denying that we love a dinner out in Byron. But what are some of our favourites for a colder, wintery night?
Ella recommends enjoying the vibe and delicious cocktails at Bang Bang. Roxanne’s must-eat list includes Pizza Paradiso in Suffolk Park. “They make delicious pizza and I just love the laid back service and homely atmosphere. They have specials on Tuesday nights, and it gets busy so make sure you book a table!”. Olivia’s pick is the locally-loved Treehouse. “Start with some share plates, before digging into cosy wood fired pizza.”
