Brooke Jowett on Travelling With a 6-Month-Old, Resetting Expectations, and Byron Bay Musts
We chat with the ever-delightful Brooke Jowett, travelling interstate for the first time with her six-month-old baby girl. From navigating travel with baby in tow, to how fitness looks postpartum, to a myriad of bookmark-worthy Byron recommendations, dive in as we soak up Brooke’s infectious positivity and travel tales.

Hi Brooke! Before we jump in, do you mind giving us a quick introduction of who you are and who you’re travelling with to Byron Bay?
I’m Brooke Jowett. A personal trainer, TV personality and more importantly, new mum to baby girl, Parker. I’m travelling to Byron Bay with my fiance Chris and 6 month old baby, Parker Jade or PJ.
Travelling from Melbourne to Byron Bay, it’s your first time travelling interstate with your gorgeous little Parker. How did the travel go, and do you have any tips or stories you can share when it comes to travelling with a young bub?
I had myself convinced that flying for the first time with Parker would be a nightmare but it was the opposite! She slept most of the flight and was only grizzly during take off and landing. Feeding her as we went up and down worked a treat for us. A carry on bag filled with her favourite toys was also very handy. I now know not to worry too much about flying with her next time – hooray for booking even more holidays now.

On the topic of baby Parker, what did you love most about spending this little getaway with her? Did this holiday look different to pre-baby getaways?
This trip was so different to the ones we took when it was just Chris and I. Dinners were at 5:30pm, cocktails were very few and we were in bed each night before the sun even went down haha. It was much more tame than usual, but so much better in many ways. We loved seeing Parker get excited in the pool or beach. She’s at an age now where she can have some solids too so it was really fun heading to all of the amazing cafes and restaurants with her.
Have you been to Byron Bay before? If so, are there any spots you can’t wait to get back to? Or, are there any new places on your wishlist?
We’ve been to Byron a few times and absolutely love it. We were dying to get back to The Byron Bay General Store, Oakberry Acai and Treehouse. Yum!

Brooke, you’re a PT, Kic Master Trainer, Survivor All Star, and have also been so open and generous in documenting your postpartum return to running journey. Can you tell us a bit about what fitness looks like for you now as a new mumma? Do you have any advice for fellow mums or mums-to-be?
Fitness post bub has been a wild ride with lots of ups and downs. Although I tried to keep active during my pregnancy, I still very much felt like I was starting from zero with my fitness postpartum. My runs went from 10km sessions pre baby to running for 30 seconds before having to break post bub. I’ve slowly built myself back up but I’m still working on it.
My advice to new mums or mums to be is to leave all expectations at the door. Take each day as it comes and try your best to be flexible. There will be days you set out to run or exercise and it just doesn’t work for you or feel right. That’s okay. Try again tomorrow. Build yourself a strong foundation before jumping straight back to where you left off and you’ll thank yourself later.
Oh, and see a pelvic floor physio! I wish I had done this sooner. If you’re pregnant, planning to get pregnant or a new mum, it’s the best thing you can do for yourself.
